As cities expand and farmland shrinks, a growing number of agricultural companies are turning to vertical farming, a method of growing crops in stacked layers inside climate-controlled buildings rather than in open fields. Unlike traditional agriculture, which depends heavily on weather, soil quality, and seasonal changes, vertical farms use artificial lighting, recycled water systems, and computer-controlled nutrient delivery to produce crops year-round, regardless of outside conditions.
One of the central arguments in favor of vertical farming is water efficiency. Because water is captured and reused within a closed system, some vertical farms report using up to 95% less water than conventional farms growing the same crop. This has made the method particularly attractive in regions facing drought or water scarcity, where traditional irrigation is becoming increasingly difficult to sustain.
Proximity to urban centers is another frequently cited benefit. Because vertical farms can be built inside or near cities, produce can reach supermarkets within hours of harvest rather than days, reducing transport costs and the environmental impact of long-distance shipping. Advocates argue this also improves freshness, since leafy greens in particular lose nutritional value quickly after harvest.
However, the technology is not without its critics. The energy required to power artificial lighting and climate control systems is substantial, and in regions where electricity is generated from fossil fuels, the environmental benefits of reduced transport may be partly cancelled out by higher energy consumption.
